La Via Francigena
The 'Via Francigena' is the route followed by Medieval pilgrims setting out from North Europe by foot for Rome.
During the long journey, the pilgrims made stops at sanctuaries and shelters. Today, through out all the Valley of 'Magra these sanctuaries and shelters are still visited. Nearness of the mouth of the Magra river brings about Luni, an important colony and Roman port.
Here the 'Via Aurelia' intersects and sets sail to the renown marble of Carrara.
